ABOUT OSCAR DE LA RENTA

Oscar de la Renta, Dominican-born American fashion designer whose work, blending European luxury with American ease, helped define standards of elegant dressing among socialites, U.S. first ladies, and red-carpet celebrities during a career that spanned some 50 years.

He first gained attention in the late 1960s and early ’70s for his gypsy- and Russian-inspired collections, which suggested the cosmopolitan sophistication that would characterise his creative output over the following decades. These collections were always distinctly modern, yet they also possessed a romantic, feminine quality, reflecting his grounding in both American sportswear and European couture.
