ABOUT THE BRAND FLETCHER JONES

An Australian Vintage fashion icon, Sir David Fletcher Jones.

After serving in the Australian Forces in Egypt and France, Fletcher suffered shell shock after being buried alive for several hours. Arriving back to Australia flagged with an inability to work, his determination and work ethic saw him refuse to retire and returned to work as a successful upholstery and drapery sales man. Eventually he purchased a menswear store in Warnambool in 1924.

His business expanded, and in 1941 he decided to form a new wholesale business making high-quality ready-made trousers.

It was all about quality, functional fabric, and don’t we now know it!

The business was boosted by a war time contract for army pants, and rapidly made a reputation for hard-wearing, 'coverdine' work trousers, for men on the land. By 1945 his Warrnambool rooms were supplying 123 retailers in four States, but he then decided to sell directly, to insist on personal fittings, and to accept cash only. When his first shop opened in Collins Street, Melbourne, on 23 June 1946, the response was astonishing, with queues stretching for blocks.

Arguably, in Australia’s fashion history had any single person done more to transform the clothing sector and, to change Australian dress standards, particularly among men, than Fletcher Jones and his staff.

High quality skirts, trousers, suits and sets are still found in incredible vintage condition throughout Australia, and continue to be true classics that have stood the test of time.

MST Tip: The must have vintage staple. Best worn high around waist, a Fletcher Jones pleated skirt can be converted from day to night with some simply styling tricks.

Worn daytime, these classic staples work well with a vintage tee and kicks, or a simple sandal and tank/ crop. Cute with a cap to give it some added confidence.

For evening, a cute kitten heel works well, alternatively a sheer ankle sock (you must check out @highheeljunglesocks) and strapped metallic heel to take this vintage icon to the next level.
